Unraveling the Mystery: God's True Nature and Character

The following text  is an extract from Chapter Two: The Greatness of God.

God Is Spirit and Has a Supernatural Existence

God doesn’t have a physical existence like human beings. Instead, He is a supernatural being existing beyond the natural realm. The Bible says God is spirit (John 4:24 NASB).

God is spirit, and the people who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. (John 4:24 NET)

Yet, for people to relate to Him, He describes Himself as having a form throughout the Bible. For example, the hand of God (Isaiah 62:3 NLT). He does this because He wants people to relate to Him as an actual being who knows and cares about them.

God’s Nature and Greatness

God is sovereign. This means He reigns and is supreme over everything. Nothing is outside His absolute authority. He is perfect in every respect. He is holy and separate from His creation. He is eternal and can’t die. He can’t be harmed or injured. He is the Creator of everything. He is majestic. He is just and righteous in all His ways. He is loving and compassionate toward people.

People are like a grain of sand compared to God. Each person on earth is like a grain of sand on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, and God is the ocean. If you were a grain of sand and you could think and see, would it be possible to comprehend the magnitude and vastness of the entire 64,196,000 square miles of the Pacific ocean? No, it would not be possible. You might see a few feet around you, but not the 64 million square miles. Even this analogy is limited by our lack of human ability to comprehend the minutest aspects of Almighty God’s nature, His majesty, and powerful existence.

Even when God reveals Himself, our human nature and brain limit our comprehension, as the following scriptures reveal:

Can you discover the essence of God? Can you find out the perfection of the Almighty? (Job 11:7 NET)

“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD. “And My ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.” (Isaiah 55:8 NLT)

Here are a few descriptions of the nature and greatness of God:

O LORD, our Lord, Your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens. (Psalms 8:1 NLT)

Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on earth is Yours, O LORD, and this is Your kingdom. We adore You as the One who is over all things. (1 Chronicles 29:11 NLT)

The LORD is great and certainly worthy of praise! No one can fathom his greatness! (Psalms 145:3 NET)

What Do You Think?

How would you describe the greatness of God to someone who has never heard of Him?

God Exists as the Trinity (ONE God in Three Persons)

His greatness can be seen in the triune nature of His existence. The following verse states that the God of the Bible is ONE God.

Jesus answered, “The foremost is, 'Hear, o Israel! The LORD our God is one LORD” (Mark 12:29 NASB)

However, He is also the Triune God, that is, ONE God in three persons. This is referred to as the “Trinity.” This word doesn’t appear in the Bible. Biblical scholars created it to help people understand the unity, yet reality of one God existing in three persons: Jehovah (God the Father), His Son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. They are each equally God in every aspect of their being and nature.

Jesus told His disciples, “Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19 NLT)
